  • YMCA Child Development Services Benefit

    Dear Friends,

As we are now in 2014, I am encouraged and inspired by the continued generosity of our community!

This provides great hope for those enduring various challenges in life. I am reminded of a quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt, “We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, better world, beyond the horizon.”

As we transition from the horizon of 2013 into the new year, we have the opportunity to provide hope for our future leaders. For children and families at or below the poverty level, hope is so important and critical to creating a pathway for success.

All proceeds from our tournament benefit the YMCA’s Child Development Program. This program is meeting a critical

My husband recently visited his family in France, but unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts I didn’t get to go with him.  To make matters worse he sent me daily updates of the amazing cathedrals, vineyards, and museums that he had … Continue reading →

I finally finished reading a book that I bought back in February. A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table by Molly Wizenberg is a really enjoyable memoir. In spite of me not finishing it quickly, it really is a good book. In it, Molly shares stories from her life. Her first kiss. Paris. Her father dying from cancer. How she met her husband. And in between the snippets of her life she shares recipes with her readers. Because that is what Molly does. She loves to cook and bake and blogs at Orangette. And should you happen to meet her or read her book, you will learn that the name of her blog is not because of her hair color, but rather in honor of chocolate dipped candied orange peels. Molly has a natural talent of weaving words together, making you feel as though you are experiencing what she is writing. It was with her last chapter that I found inspiration to create my first flourless chocolate cake.

Does it seem to you that the Paleo craze just won't go away. Personally - I don't think it will, nor should it, for good reason. People are becoming healthier when they go paleo. For some, starting and sticking to a paleo diet is not a problem. But many starting the new lifestyle struggle finding food that has a sense of familiarity. You know - comfort food. For those people - like me - Tammy Credicott's book Paleo Indulgences: Healthy Gluten-Free Recipes to Satisfy Your Primal Cravings hits the spot. She has created paleo versions of scones, muffins, quick breads, cupcakes, brownies, crackers, and so many more tempting treats that no one has an excuse for straying off the paleo path.

When I attended a summer social last month in Asheville, I received a little recipe book with recipes for Musselman's Apple Butter. Apple Butter. Honestly, I had never used apple butter in recipes, so I was intrigued. Flipping through the recipe book, I saw a photo and recipe for Apple Butter Bake Beans. As luck would have it, I have been wanting a good recipe for making homemade baked beans. It must have been meant for me to try. So I did.

At the last leg of our food journey, we found ourselves at New Market BBQ.  The restaurant is a red-roofed wooden building, surrounded by barrels of brightly colored flowers.  It is the kind of place you see and you know … Continue reading →
