| Description: | The Alabama Songwriters Competition will hold its 11th competition of the Alabama Songwriters Festival (ASF). The ASF will offer two educational elements for songwriters and the general public. The Festival will present live music, storytelling, and excerpts from the local community theater. An arts exhibit celebrating Alabama‚ Department of Tourism‚s, „Year of Food‰ and music from the Mountain Echo Dulcimer Players taking place at the Mountain Valley Arts Council Gallery. During the event, two educational components will be offered, "Rhythm and Rhyme" designed for beginning songwriters. This class will be open to participants, 16 years of age and under. The second component, a Master Class, will focus on the seasoned songwriter, offering techniques and constructive critiques. Saturday, June 30th, at Town Hall, the Songwriters competition will have three genres which may be entered; Inspirational, Country/Bluegrass and Contemporary/Pop. Entries will be rated in three categories; lyrics (40%), originality (35%), and music (25%). Each categories \'percent\' will factor into the final score. Notable judges from the music profession will rate each contestant. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each genre. At City Harbor, an appearance by Tom Sawyer and other storytellers will capture the imagination of the young and old. Talented theatrical performers from our local community theater will amuse the audience with excerpts from their latest production, „Lovein‚ the 60‚s‰. Friday night, after opening ceremonies, „Crossfire‰ will entertain the crowd with a free concert. Two free concerts on Saturday evening are scheduled. The first is „Nash Street‰, who will open for Taylor Hicks, Alabama‚s own American Idol winner. Performances by these bands will allow established musicians a platform to entertain the festival audience and increase attendance. Children\'s activities will include face painting and a "Make and Take" tent. Sand Mountain Cruisers and the Arab Classic Cars Club will host a classic car show at Town Harbor on Friday and Saturday, June 29th and 30th. On the pier, Vintage Boats, from days gone by, will be docked for all to admire. The Harbor grounds will be filled with food and beverage vendors as well as, art and merchandise vendors. |
