Dr. Sonya Wintzell is a dedicated dental professional, business owner, and leader committed to elevating patient care and empowering her team. With a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Judson College and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she has built her career on both clinical excellence and compassionate service. How has the business culture changed for women?

Over the course of my career, the business landscape for women has shifted in powerful and meaningful ways. When I first entered dentistry, women were still working to establish a strong presence in the field. Today that has changed dramatically. Women now make up nearly half of dental school graduates, and with that comes greater visibility influence and opportunity. There is, without question, a more accessible seat at the table than there once was.

But with that progress has come a new set of challenges.

The pressure on today’s dentist — especially women balancing leadership, clinical excellence, and often family responsibilities —  is greater than ever. Declining insurance reimbursements and the rapid expansion of corporate owned dental practices have reshaped the business model of dentistry. Success is no longer just about clinical skill; it requires resilience, business acumen, and a clear sense of identity in an increasingly competitive and commoditized market.

While the path may be more open for women, the expectations are higher and the stakes feel more personal. That’s where true leadership comes in,  knowing your value, holding your standards, and continuing to create something exceptional in a challenging landscape.

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most about my work is the opportunity to create healthy smiles, and connect with my team and more importantly my patients. I’m passionate about empowering my team to see themselves as leaders, because a strong culture starts with competent people. I value the trust we build with our patients and the lasting relationships that come from truly caring for them. We celebrate life events with our patients and we cry at life hardships with our patients. I hope I enrich their lives by what I do and I know they enrich mine by the friendships I have with them. And at the heart of it all, I love the artistry of dentistry—creating beautiful, confident smiles that genuinely change lives. Nothing fills my heart more than when someone sees their new smile for the first time and it brings tears of joy.
