What circumstances or person/people helped shape you in your career?

Growing up in a lower to middle-class family, I was impacted early by the work ethic and values of my parents. From an early age, my sisters and I were taught the importance of working hard and persevering no matter what the challenge. Our parents wanted us to succeed and overcome the obstacles they faced. Fast forward to 1998 when I decided to complete my college degree, I was a lending assistant for a phenomenal woman, who supported me and pushed me to do more, and she has stayed in touch with me throughout my career, encouraging me and cheering me on. Then, accepting a position in Huntsville, I have had multiple mentors who pushed me to step outside the box, which enabled me to progress in my career. Now, I strive to pay it forward and mentor others who want to succeed in the financial industry.

What civic organizations or nonprofits have you been involved with, and why have those been important to you?

Since coming to Huntsville, I have served and serve on multiple nonprofit boards, as well mentoring high school and college students. To me, volunteering and giving back are ways of paying forward to those who took the time to invest in me. I feel that I have been blessed throughout my career, and giving back is my way of repaying those who invested so much time and faith in me.
I am actively involved with organizations including the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball Executive Leadership Team, Women’s Economic Development Council, Huntsville/Madison County Leadership Alumni, 100+ Women of Madison County Who Care, and Women in Defense.

How has business culture changed for women since your career started?

I started my career in banking in the 90s, and times were much different for women then. Women are now more accepted in key leadership roles within business, and those of us in those roles should mentor and support the younger women who will follow and take our place.

Do you have a favorite inspiring quote you’d like to share?

My favorite quote is, “No act done for someone else is ever wasted.” It’s a reminder of the importance of being kind and giving back. You never know how an act of kindness may change the life of the person.
