What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my job is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every single day. At Athens State University, our mission to serve adult learners and transfer students is incredibly powerful and these are students balancing careers, families, and responsibilities, yet still pursuing their educational goals. Being part of a university that meets them where they are and helps them move forward is deeply rewarding. I also value the variety each day brings. One moment I may be meeting with students and hearing firsthand about their aspirations, and the next I’m connecting with alumni, community leaders, or partners who help us expand opportunities for those we serve. Those interactions keep the work dynamic and constantly remind me that higher education is not just about programs or policies—it’s about people, their stories, and the futures they are building.
What’s your favorite thing about living in the Huntsville/Madison County area?
What I love most about living in the Huntsville/Madison County area is the incredible energy and opportunity that surrounds you. There’s a vibrant arts and music scene, along with a growing number of outstanding local restaurants that make it such an enjoyable place to spend time and connect with others. What really stands out, though, is the commitment to learning and growth. With so many educational opportunities—from universities to community programs—there’s a shared sense that learning doesn’t stop at any stage of life. That mindset is inspiring. At the same time, you can feel the excitement of a region that is truly on the rise. The pace of growth, innovation, and community development makes it a place where you know something meaningful is happening and I get to be part of it.
What circumstances or people helped shape you in your career?
I’ve been shaped by a combination of people and experiences that, together, have influenced how I lead and think about my work. My dad, Dr. Albert Wehlburg, who was a faculty member at the University of Florida, had a profound impact on me. Growing up around higher education, I saw firsthand the importance of teaching, curiosity, and a deep commitment to students. That example has stayed with me throughout my career. I was also shaped in meaningful ways by playing French horn in band and orchestras over the years – and I still play with the Athens State University Community Band. Music taught me discipline, collaboration, and the importance of listening—really listening—to those around you. It reinforced that individual excellence matters, but it’s the collective effort that creates something truly powerful. And, perhaps somewhat unexpectedly, my experience as a glass blower taught me lessons I carry with me every day. Glass blowing requires patience, creativity, and a willingness to take risks. Not everything works the first time, but that’s part of the process. It taught me that growth often comes from stepping into the unknown and being willing to learn through doing—an approach that has influenced both my leadership style and my perspective on innovation.
