Dr. Sonya Wintzell

Owner, Dental Professionals on Whitesburg

Dr. Sonya Wintzell has been in dentistry for over 20 years. After attending UAB Dental School she had the opportunity to locate to Huntsville, Ala., to work with Dr. Lisa Bruce whom she counts not only as a friend but a wonderful mentor. As current owner of Dental Professionals on Whitesburg she is passionate about helping others pursue optimal dental health and creating amazingly beautiful smiles.

In 2011, Dr. Wintzell was awarded a Fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists for her studies in implant surgery and restorations. Additionally, she belongs to numerous professional associations. Her work of creating beautiful smiles with facial procedures like Botox and filler led her to become a mentor alongside the faculty of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.

When not focusing on dentistry, Dr. Wintzell enjoys spending time with her husband Al and their four children – Jacob 25, Olivia 21, Benjamin 18, and Chloe 10. Giving back to the community is important to her and led her to work with local organizations including Kids to Love, the Community Foundation, and Huntsville Botanical Garden. She loves the city of Huntsville and is excited about the future of this community.

What did you dream of being when you grew up?

When I graduated from high school my second-grade teacher presented me with a gift. It was a project she has all her second graders do and she held on to them all those years in anticipation of their graduation. It was a notecard that I made that said, “When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.” So, I didn’t stray too far from that goal since I am a doctor of the teeth and the smile.

What circumstances or people/person helped shape you in your career?

My business partner of many years Dr. Lisa Bruce was and still is a huge mentor and confidant for me in my career. I became her associate straight out of dental school, and she poured into me from day one including sending me to the most premiere post-doctoral education center in the US, the Pankey Institute, to help shape me into the doctor I am today. And, of course, my husband has always believed in me, even more than I believe in myself at times. His encouragement and belief in me have propelled me to do so many things I would have never done myself. He is my biggest fan and pushes me to become all that I want and can be.

What do you love most about your job?

This is a two-part answer because both are so dear to me. First would be the patients. It is a joy to be a part of helping them achieve excellent oral health and creating beautiful smiles. I really have the best patients in the world! Many enter as patients but continue on as friends. Second, would be the team. I love having such am amazing group of professionals all working together to help patients and deliver care in such a quality way. Watching the team grow into leaders is so rewarding.

What differentiates you from peers or competitors?

I do not have competitors. The moment I take my eyes off my own business and what I should be doing is the moment I am not living up to my own expectations and am looking at limitations. I prefer to look for opportunities. Huntsville has a great community of dentists, and our city should be proud of the dental community. I will say, though, that we excel in providing quality care in a comfortable environment and are committed to exceptional customer service. I constantly pour into the team, training from all aspects to make sure we are providing a level of service that people rarely see. We often say we love to make our patients smile and that has more to do with the way we treat them than it does the treatment we provide to their teeth.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Huntsville?

I am so proud of our community and love telling people about Huntsville. From our history embedded in space technology to our current aerospace, military, defense, and technology industries, Huntsville continues to emerge as a leader in professional opportunities. Our growth presents individuals from all backgrounds to reach their dreams. Because of this, Huntsville has grown a richly diverse community that only continues to enhance and expand the vision of this great city.
